Coutances
Manche, Normandy

Flag of France
Coutances lies in the middle of the Department of Manche.
Coutances Coutances is crowned by its glorious twin-spired Norman-gothic cathedral, the finest in the NW of France. Visitors can marvel at its bright interior (which is lit by a large lantern tower), the relics of numerous saints and the deeply venerated 14th C. statue of Our Lady of Coutances.

The city has an excellent shopping centre, fine public gardens, an interesting local museum and the ruins of an ancient aquaduct. It is a convenient stepping-off point for the fine beaches of Agon-Coutainville and the beautiful Romanesque Abbey of Lessay (rebuilt following near destruction in 1944).
