The beaches between Cancale and Mont St.Michel do not compare well with those further west or those to the south of Granville. However, the long stretch of slightly muddy sand [backed by dunes and salt-marsh] centered on the small resort of Le Vivier does have a certain charm, especially in aspects that include Mont St.Michel. The salt-marsh area, known as the Marais, has been carefully drained as a polder (like in the Netherlands), generating fertile farmland where garlic and onions are grown, excellent summer grazing for sheep and cattle and a haven for wildlife.
Between Le Vivier and Dol-de-Bretagne lies the extraordinary feature known as Mont Dol. Although it is only 208 feet high, it resembles a small mountain because it is surrounded by the huge flat area of the Marais. It is possible to drive right to the top of Mont Dol, from where there is a spectacular panoramic view over the Bay of Mont St.Michel to the north and the old coastline leading up to Dol itself to the south. |
