| One of the great ferry ports of northern France, St.Malo has a long association with the sea and oceans. Jacques Cartier sailed from here to discover Canada, and the "Corsair City" was the home base of many a privateer such as Admiral Surcouf. The old walled city, on a peninsular outside of the harbour, was almost totally destroyed during the 1939-45 war. However, it has been faithfully restored and now teems with tourists and locals enjoying the shops and the food provided by the many fine restaurants. St.Malo is the place to settle down and eat les fruits de mer!
St.Malo is surrounded by several excellent beaches and is adjacent to the famous Rance power station that exploits the huge tidal variation of the area. The road across the barrage leads to Dinard, that most English of France's holiday resorts.
St.Malo also offers frequent fast ferries (vehicule and foot passenger) to the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. |
