| Vitré is the best-preserved "old-world" town in Brittany. Its fortified castle, its ramparts, its church and its small streets have remained just as they were 400 or 500 years ago and make a picturesque and evocative picture which is long remembered.
The old town is built on a spur commanding the deep valley of the Vilaine on one side and a railway cutting on the other. Its numerous fine half-timbered mediaeval houses reflect the great prosperity of the 15th-17thC., when hemp, wool and cotton stockings were sold not only in France but in England, Germany, Spain, America and the Indies. |
